In Japan, the “pet boom” can be traced back to 2003. At least in the eyes of the Japanese, keeping a dog has become a viable and practical alternative to raising a child. . Since 2003, the number of dogs and cats combined has outnumbered the number of children in Japan. Moreover, this gap is widening as more and more dogs are brought into Japan each year. The popularity of Japanese dogs is real, the numbers don't lie. And with such gorgeous and charming native Japanese breeds, we understand why. That said, here are all 13 great Japanese dog breeds in order of popularity

Japanese dog breeds by popularity

Note:  Many Japanese breed names contain the word “Inu” (eg, Shiba Inu, Akita Inu, etc.). This does not necessarily mean that the varieties are closely related.

Rather, the word "inu" means  dog in Japanese. Likewise, the word “ken” also means “dog” in Japanese. So,  Kai Ken  and  Kishu Ken  are two different breeds with separate bloodlines.

1. Sakhalin Husky

Very attractive dog breeds that anyone encounters

Outstanding Features

Loyal, Diligent, Confident.

Sakhalin Husky is by far the rarest Japanese dog breed in the world today. In fact, these dogs are nearly extinct. they are very rare that have only two purebred Sakhalin Huskies recorded in Japan in 2011.

Even so, there may be more Sakhalin Huskies that we don't know yet. Researchers estimate that there are an unspecified number of this breed still alive on Sakhalin Island.

These dogs are some of the oldest sled dog breeds. They were originally bred by indigenous Nivkh people for winter transportation and various jobs. Russian explorers quickly exported them to the Soviet Union and used them in the Red Army.

Sergey Lyubykh, the world's only Sakhalin Husky breeder, died in 2012. And shortly before his death, Lyubykh said there weren't enough Sakhalin Huskies in the world to continue breeding. There should be sufficient genetic diversity.

These Japanese huskies first appeared on the world stage thanks to Japan's infamous research expedition to Antarctica in 1958. An emergency evacuation was carried out, leaving 15 huskies stay with intent return.

However, the weather conditions only got worse and the rescue never happened. After a year, a new expedition arrived and found two of the dogs still alive, Taro and Jiro. Today, these two dogs are the national heroes of Japan.

Sakhalin Husky dog personality

These unique Japanese huskies are extremely devoted to their owners. Like many other Japanese breeds, Sakhalin Huskies are loyal to a bug. They will never waver and tend to stick with their owners.

Sakhalin Huskies are very emotional dogs and are very good at obedience training (thanks in large part to their work ethic). However, they are not too eager to please. The right balance between training and positive encouragement must be used with Sakhalin.

Sakhalin Huskies are  working dogs. In other words, they don't like being alone or doing nothing for long periods of time. In addition, they have incredible stamina and endurance making them ideal for transportation work.

Many people describe these dogs as  very intelligent, independent, alert and confident. In addition, they tend to play well with children and other dogs. After all, they can be "pack dogs".

2. Ryukyu Inu Chó dog

Very attractive dog breeds that anyone encounters

Highlights

Brave, Smart, Alert.

The Ryukyu Inu is a Japanese breed that very few people have heard of, even in Japan. In fact, there are an estimated 400 (in 2015), making them one of the rarest dog breeds to come from Japan.

They are native to the southern islands of Japan, known as  Okinawa  (also known as the “Hawaii of Japan”) and known as the  National Treasure  of the island. Despite this, Ryukyu's history and origins are somewhat unclear.

But given their physical qualities, many researchers believe that they were originally bred to  hunt and/or track  wild boars on the Japanese island. That said, what's special about the Ryukyus is the layer of  dew on the tops of their feet.

Through years of evolution while living in a tropical forest, Ryukyu Inu has developed this useful physical quality. Therefore, they can easily climb trees. Their ability to track from a higher vantage point is what makes them formidable predators.

Personality of the dog Ryukyu Inu

Ryukyu Inu is a docile and calm dog. But despite their gentle nature, there are few things that really frighten the Ryukyu Inu. Their courageous attitude is the reason they became the top hunters for the ferocious wild boars.

They are versatile hunters. They not only hunt with single owners, but also work effectively in groups. Although Ryukyu doesn't bark a lot, they are always alert to their surroundings. In addition, they had a high predation ability, as expected from skilled hunting dogs.

For this reason, Ryukyu Inus is not recommended to live with smaller animals, such as cats or rodents. In addition, early and regular socialization training is necessary with these dogs to live a normal life during domestication.

And despite popular belief, Ryukyus are intelligent dogs with a high IQ of instinct and adaptation. Just understand that they require a lot of physical and mental stimulation to live a happy and healthy life.

3. Japanese Terrier

Very attractive dog breeds that anyone encounters

Highlights:

Cheerful, Vivacious, Affectionate.

The Japanese Terrier, commonly known as the  Nippon Terrier, is a small dog breed that originated in the country of Japan. Although they are wonderful dogs, they are an extremely rare breed, even in Japan.

Locals believe that the breed was developed through crossbreeding various foxhounds, terriers, and other native Japanese dogs. However, not all researchers agree with this theory.

Instead, historians believe that the ancestors of the Japan Terrier were brought to the country by Dutch merchant ships (at the port of Nagasaki) around the 17th century. Again, there is no concrete evidence to confirm this. accept this theory.

Currently, the Japanese Terrier is not recognized by the American Kennel Club. In fact, the Nippon Terrier is only recognized by the Japan Kennel Club and the American Kennel Club. However, they are more recognized than most of Japan's native breeds.

Personality of the Japanese Terrier

This terrier was developed with the sole purpose of being to elect you. In other words, they are great pet dogs and playmates great. These terriers are perfect as family pets because that is what they are intended for.

But if you are looking for a skilled hunting dog or an alert watch dog, the Japanese Terrier may not be for you. Instead, try one of Japan's six indigenous dog breeds (Shiba, Akita, Shokiku, Kai Ken, Hokkaido, Kishu Ken).

However, if you want a reliable and fun dog that will play well with your children, the Japanese Terrier is a dog you should consider. The Japanese Terrier is a lovable breed with a vibrant  and lively character' personality.

A big plus for allergy sufferers is that the Japanese Terrier is a hypoallergenic breed. They are the perfect Japanese breed for allergy-sensitive dog owners who cannot tolerate shedding and the allergies that come with it.

4. Tosa Inu . Dog

Very attractive dog breeds that anyone encounters

Highlights

Alert, Fearless, Sensitive.

The Tosa Inu is another rare breed from the indigenous Tosa region, Japan (now known as Kōchi Prefecture). And because of their enormous size (up to 200 lbs), Tosa are often referred to as the Japanese Mastiff.

Like other mastiff dogs, Tosa Inus were originally bred to be fighting dogs, but are now often bred to be excellent guard dogs. Think of them as dog versions of sumo wrestlers. In Japan, they are treated with great respect and courtesy.

In the 19th century, Tosa Inus was bred in Japan using the  Native Shikoku Inu and other dogs. Foreign breeds include the Saint Bernard, English Mastiff, English Bulldog, Great Dane, German Pointer and Bull Terrier.

Today, Tosa Inus is bred all over the world. However, what was surprising was that the  Tosa Inus raised in Japan  were much smaller than those raised outside. In fact, they are nearly half the size in Japan. Therefore, Tosa Inus comes in all different shapes and sizes.

Personality of the Tosa Inu dog

It is not surprising that the Tosa Inu is a aggressive and potential dog breed. After all, they were bred to be “evil” fighting dogs. So it makes sense that they don't play well with other dogs. Plus, they can become deadly predators for cats.

Although Tosa Inus is usually not aggressive with familiar people, aggressive behavior can occur. I recommend that you never let them play with children unsupervised no matter how much you trust the dog. Even so, they are patient dogs.

With strong personalities and many outstanding traits, these dogs are certainly not suitable for first-time dog owners nor for casual owners. Without a solid and consistent leader in the group, Tosa Inus tend to quickly establish their dominance.

In order to limit the possibility of them causing harm to humans and other animals,  Tosa Inus needs to be noticed or taken care of early. This means they must be socialized and undergo appropriate obedience training. And the sooner they do, the better.

5. Kai Ken

Very attractive dog breeds that anyone encounters

Highlights

Devotion, Courage, Thrift.

The Kai Ken is an uncommon Japanese breed despite being nationally recognized. One of Japan's six indigenous breeds, the Kai Ken is a national treasure to its home and is protected by the Nihon Ken Hozonkai (Nippo).

Needless to say, they were  excellent hunting dogs  and were bred to hunt deer, elk, wild boar and bears in the steep mountain regions of Yamanashi. They are not only quick in the water but also very good at climbing trees. This makes them Japan's most versatile hunters.

Kai Ken has had several guest roles in Japanese popular culture, appearing in various manga and anime shows. These references undeniably helped popularize Kai Ken among the younger generation of Japan.

For example, Kai Ken (along with Akita Inu) was featured in the popular manga series Ginga and Kacchū no Senshi Gamu. Both were highly regarded in Japan during the peak of their popularity.

Kai Ken Dog Personality

Like other native Japanese breeds, the Kai Ken is highly intelligent with natural hunting instincts. They become  excellent watchdogs thanks to their bravery, vigilance and aloof behavior towards strangers.

Believe it or not, they are especially good with young children. Plus, they tend to get along well with other dogs in the family. And although they are very independent dogs, Kai kens will develop a loving and strong bond with family members.

Kai Kens loves the outdoors and livesin harmony with nature. So, taking them out of their “favorite habitat” and attaching them in an urban city is not the best idea. But if you have no other choice, make sure you take them outdoors regularly.

Because Kai Kens are physically gifted with agility and agility, they love to run. These dogs will hunt their prey by swimming across rivers and streams. So if you live by a lake or river, swimming can be a great exercise idea.

6. Kishu Ken

Very attractive dog breeds that anyone encounters

Highlights

Docile, proud, loyal.

The Kishu Ken (sometimes called the Kishu Inu) is one of the oldest  dog breeds  that have appeared in Japan. And according to  Wag Walking, they may have been domesticated for several thousand years.

The name of this Japanese breed comes from the place where they were bred: the  Old Kishu  region (now called Wakayama Prefecture). And unlike the other six native dog breeds, the Kishu was bred to hunt deer and wild boar by using their "brand method".

Instead of barking to intimidate their prey, they carefully and cautiously tracked them in their hunt. For this method to work, they need to be light-footed and alert at all times. Therefore, they are called the "silent hunters" of Japan.

At first sight, Kishu Ken is physically similar to Hokkaido Inu. In fact, they are the same size. However, the personality is often described as more like Shiba Inu. However, this will depend on the individual dog.

Kishu dog personality

Kishu Kens are very brave and courageous, making them one of the most capable hunting dogs in Japan. With their "silent stalking" hunting technique, it's no surprise that they are quiet dogs, both in the field and indoors.

Despite their high hunting instincts, Kishu Kens can live with cats and small dogs (if kept together). However, you should still be cautious. The ability to distinguish between animals to hunt and make friends requires a high adaptive IQ, which Kishu Kens has.

Kishus are welcomed for their unwavering loyalty to the herd and family. As such, they are great with the young children of the family. Furthermore, they are very observant housekeepers that like to view their territory from a high base.

Their only potential downside is their outstanding and strong-willed personalities. This means that it is absolutely essential for proper obedience training and socialization as a puppy. Kishus will ask a company leader to provide guidance for the flock.

7. Hokkaido Inu dog

Very attractive dog breeds that anyone encounters

Outstanding Features

Courage, Integrity, Loyalty.

The Hokkaido Inu dog is native to the island and northern province of Japan, known as Hokkaido. In Japan, they are also known as Ainu Ken, Seta and Ainu dogs. Hokkaidos look very similar to Shiba and Akita, although they are medium sized versions.

Hokkaidos have a long and thick coat, mainly to withstand the harsh cold of Hokkaido's winter. In other words, the Hokkaido's double coat makes them more maintainable than other Japanese breeds. Grooming is a must for Hokkaido dogs.

They were originally bred by the Indigenous Ainu people in Northeastern Japan to be hunting companions. These dogs have been developed with endurance in mind, all the while maintaining their top agility in cold snowy terrain.

Hokkaido dog personality

Perhaps the most famous characteristic of Hokkaido Inu is their  loyalty and devotion to their master. This is a common feature of all Japanese dog breeds. But when combined with their superior  confidence , they will take every opportunity to prove themselves to their master.

Since they are originally hunting dogs, Hokkaidos have excellent sense of smell and navigation. That is to say, a lost Hokkaido Inu usually won't be lost for long. In fact, they will always find their way home no matter the distance.

Hokkaido Inus are intelligent dogs. On top of that, they are very easy to train with snacks. But according to hunters, a Hokkaido raised in a typical home environment may not exhibit the same personality as those raised in a hunting kennel.

8. Sanshu Inu Chó

Very attractive dog breeds that anyone encounters

Highlights

Lovely, Loyal, Sweet.

One of the more recent Japanese breeds, the Sanshu Inu is a Japanese breed developed in the early 1900s (circa 1912). They are a cross between Chow Chow, Aichi (ancient Japanese dog) and other Japanese Inus breeds.

Although they are relatively common in Japan, Sanshu are extremely rare abroad. It's a pity that they don't get the recognition they deserve. Sanshus are excellent guard dogs and affectionate companions for Japanese families.

Sanshu Inu may look similar to Akita or Shiba Inu. However, the biggest difference is in the tail. Sanshus have a much straighter tail than other dogs, the Inus being more common. Shiba and most of the other "Inus" have their characteristic floating tail curly .

Even the Japan Kennel Club does not recognize Sanshu. So these dogs come in a variety of coat colors: brown, red, fawn, gray and blue. Since there is no official breed standard their coat can vary quite a bit.

Sanshu Inu dog personality

Although the Sanshu Inus are excellent guard dogs , they are best known for their companion. And like most companion dogs, they are affectionate and loyal dogs. Sanshus are the sensitive dogs that respond best to active training.

Even so, training a Sanshu Inu is easier than you think. They are serious about training and want nothing more than to please their owners.

Sanshus will often form very close and personal  relationships with members of their family. That said, it's not uncommon for them to protect their family at all costs. I mean, there's a reason why they're popular guard dogs in Japanese homes.

In addition, the Sanshu Inu is a low-maintenance dog so it is relatively easy to care for. Like a cat, these dogs will often clean up on their own. While they are clean dogs, that doesn't mean you should skip basic grooming and hygiene.

9. Shikoku Inu Chó Dog

Very attractive dog breeds that anyone encounters

Highlights

Careful, Dedicated, Lively.

The Shikoku Inu is named after the island of Shikoku in southern Japan. Like all other indigenous breeds, Shikokus were originally bred for hunting in the mountains. Therefore, they are versatile dogs known for their endurance, agility, and speed.

At one point, the Shikokus were the precious possessions of the Matagi  ( traditional winter hunters ). They are not only hunting dogs, but also excellent watchdogs endowed with a good nose and intuition in the field of hunting.

They are compact dogs with a sturdy frame, which makes them more agile and speed in the hunt. This lean frame also helps increase endurance. In addition, the dense double coat was bred to protect them from rough terrain elements, such as bushes and shrubs.

Only recently, the breed was included in the AKC's FSS standard. In addition, the Shikoku Inu has been recognized by both the Japan Kennel Club and the Canadian Kennel Club, and rightfully so.

Character of the dog Shikoku

The Shikoku Inus has a lot of great qualities that we see in other Japanese hound breeds, such as fortitude and caution. They have a “tough personality” and are very confident when it comes to wild game over rough terrain.

However, Shikokus wasn't always like that. In your home, they will be very loyal, sweet and kind. The personality probably fits the stereotype of the ideal family dog than most Japanese breeds. They are hunters by day, affectionate companions by night.

The main difference between Shiba and Shikoku is the contrast in personality. The Shikoku breed is not stubborn and not independent like the Shiba Inu. Shikokus are much easier to count when they are with loved ones at home.

10. Japanese Chin Dog

Very attractive dog breeds that anyone encounters

Highlights

Independent, Loyal, Alert.

The Japanese Chin is also known as the Japanese Spaniel. This toy dog has a long history with the Japanese nobility. They were very popular among the nobility and elite of Japan, and it's easy to see why.

But even with Chin's history in Japan, there is a lot of confusion about the origin. Yes, they are called “Japanese Chin”, but they may not be native to Japan. Historians have difficulty agreeing on where they came from and when they arrived.

Some believe that the Chin Dog was gifted to Japan from the rulers of Korea in AD 732. On the other hand, some believe that they may have come from China in the 6th century. Despite the theories, there is no concrete evidence in favor of either side.

The Japanese Chin dog is very unique because of its natural folded eyes also known as crossed eyes. In addition, a Chin with an undercoat can take almost  2 years to fully grow. At that time, the coat is  black and white or red and white, but always eye-catching.

Personality of Japanese Chin Dogs

A big reason for this breed's popularity is its "cat-like" personality. For example, they like to use their feet to clean their face and they have a good feeling of balance especially.. Both qualities are commonly found in cats.

In addition, Japanese Chin Dogs are watchful, intelligent and independent dogs. Like most Japanese dog breeds, Chin Dogs are loyal and friendly to their owners and families. And with proper training, they make the best therapy dogs.

For hundreds of years, Chin Dogs were bred to entertain the nobility  of Japan. So it makes sense for them to learn great commands and tricks. In fact, they are famous for a trick called “ chin rotation “, in which they spin rapidly on two legs.

You can check out chin rotation tips here. They certainly have their quirks, but that's part of their charm. They love nothing more than entertainment and being the center of attention. I think it's safe to say, you'll never have a dull moment with Japanese Chin.

11. Japanese Spitz Dog

Very attractive dog breeds that anyone encounters

Highlights

Affectionate, Playful, Obedient.

The Japanese Spitz is a small breed belonging to the SpSpitz dog family. Bred as  companion dogs, they are closely related to Pomeranians, Samoyeds, and American Eskimos (among others). Isn't it obvious from the way they look?

The Japanese Spitz was born in Japan in the 1920s, when breeders began to breed different types of Spitz breeds. According to the AKC, they are direct descendants of the  white German Spitz breed, which was introduced into Japan via Siberia and China.

These spitz dogs are now recognized by every major international kennel club, with the exception of the American Kennel Club.

Since then, these spits have become popular due to their favorable character and ease of care. Interestingly, despite their long silky coat, debris and other trash didn't stick to their coat.

Personality of the Japanese Spitz

The Japanese spitz will thrive when fully participating in family events. They are kind-hearted dogs and it is impossible not to show affection towards their owners. Due to their loyal nature, they make excellent watchdogs for families.

If faced with unfamiliar people, they will bark to warn the family of approaching intruders. But given their small size, they can do little other than warn the family.

No one is surprised that they play well with children and can make a great dog for seniors. No matter what you have planned, Japanese Spitz is ready to be by your side. They were really  dogs towardspeople.

Don't mistake their playful side for rashness and recklessness. The Japanese Spitz has a gentle side that will get along well with any owner or family. However, these toy dogs require a lot of interaction from their owners. They don't like to be alone.

12. Akita Inu dog

Very attractive dog breeds that anyone encounters

Highlights

Loyal, Independent, Brave.

The Akita is a very popular and highly appreciated dog breed originating from the northern region of Japan. Specifically, from Akita Prefecture. They are one of the few Japanese dogs that have actually made it to the West and thrived.

These large dogs have become  national symbols of Japan, similar to  Jindo of Korea. Because of this, they are not cheap. In fact, they are one of the most expensive dog breeds in the world. However, you get what you pay for.

There are two special variations of the Akita Inu. While there is the original Japanese Akita Inu, there is also the "American Akita". The strange thing is that the two are considered separate breeds  in every country, except the United States and Canada.

The remarkable and moving story of the Hachikō is what first brought this Japanese breed to the international stage. Throughout the years, this story has been told countless times in various forms of media, fueling the breed's popularity.

Akita Inu dog personality

The Akita Inu is a territorial dog. They can be aloof and wary with strangers, which may be why the Japanese view them as the best guard dogs. The Akita's most notable trait, however, is its loyalty unlike any other.

According to the American Kennel Club, they do not get along well with other dogs of the same sex, especially with male Akitas. And even with two different genders, there's no guarantee there won't be any fights in the house.

Akitas are powerful and independent dogs with alpha personalities that need to be tested. That's why obedience and socialization training are so important at an early stage. Only a well-trained Akita can be docile towards non-threatening strangers.

Oddly enough, despite their strong personalities, they play well with children. In fact, it is generally believed that Akitas have a special relationship with children. Think of them as an additional feather guard for your pup (with proper training).

13. Shiba Inu dog

Very attractive dog breeds that anyone encounters

Highlights

Courageous, Confident, Charming.

The Shiba Inu is the most popular Japanese dog breed in the world. Famous for inspiring one of the biggest and oldest jokes on the internet, Shiba gave us the  meme doge. However, Shiba has a lot more to offer.

They are small and quickdogs originating from the mountain regions of Japan. But because of their growing popularity online, they can now be found all over the world. In addition, the fact that they were such adaptable dogs also made them famous.

The Shiba Inus is often confused with Japanese dogs that look alike, such as the Akita Inu or the Hokkaido Inu (check out our detailed comparison of the  Shiba and the Akita Inu ). However, they are much smaller with a separate bloodline.

While they may be small dogs, they are not your typical toy dogs. Don't expect them to be fine lounging in your lap. Shiba is thin, muscular, and faster than he looks. After all, they were originally bred to hunt small wild game.

The first very recorded Shiba Inu came to America in 1954. they were brought back by a military family stationed in Japan. And since then, the Shiba Inus has steadily climbed as one of the most popular foreign dog breeds.

Character of the Shiba Inu . dog

The Shiba Dog breed is an independent, cat-like dog. This may explain why they tend to get along with other cats even though their prey is driving. At the very least, they get along better with other dogs. Ideally they should live in a one-dog household.

However, dogs with early socialization and a little training, they can still "Integrate" when living with other dogs. What is more surprising is that they do not play well with young children. They are proud dogs that do not respond well to rough play.

Despite the negatives, these dogs are smart with a kind personality.. It's just that they can be somewhat stubborn and strong-willed. On the bright side, the Shiba Dog is very easy tan break. And sometimes, they will destroy themselves.

The Shiba Inu is famous for a distinguishable high-pitched scream, known as " Shiba Scream." You can check it out here. You can hear them scream if you handle them in a nasty way. However, a similar cry can come from extreme happiness and joy.
